That checked out. So far so good. The responses to his videos on social media, both pro and con, suggested he was saying that the COVID-19 virus wasn't the cause of the sickness or that ventilators weren't necessary. I listened closely. That was clearly not what he was saying. He was saying that the disease model most doctors are working with – pneumonia/ARDS – is not what these patients are presenting with and the treatment protocol is not suited to their disease. He was cautious and tentative in his conclusions, just what you'd expect from a serious clinician. His argument was that it is a different syndrome requiring different treatments. Ventilators are the best treatment we have now, he said, but they should be used differently (different use of pressure, settings, all well beyond my understanding). It seemed legit. But obviously I have zero understanding about anything to do with respiratory disease or its treatment. For all those reasons I was intrigued but didn't write anything about it, though I was eager to hear from other clinicians who might be able to evaluate what he was saying.
New Yorkers like Tiffany Pinckney are donating blood to help fight the coronavirus pandemic. AP The Montefiore Health System, to which White Plains Hospital belongs, is even conducting one of the clinical trials using plasma from those who belong to Young Israel of New Rochelle, an early center of the outbreak. Behrbom did not qualify for the clinical trial. But through appeals on social media, Cohen managed to line up donors who were eager to help his brother. He said Behrbom's doctor applied to the Food and Drug Administration to allow for "compassionate use" of the plasma treatment and expected to get approval. The plasma donation would be collected and processed by the New York Blood Center in Manhattan. But White Plains Hospital does not have a contract with the blood center for the plasma donations, and Cohen said its blood bank refused to write the necessary order to do it. Cohen, who also lives in Ardsley, said he was heartened by the people willing to help his brother. "It's, of all things, a hospital standing in the way of this, " he said.
The research team at Cedars-Sinai is currently working with the FDA to explore an expedited regulatory process to use the treatment as a possible medical intervention for those suffering from the Wuhan coronavirus. (Via AP) [Aytu BioScience, Inc. (the "Company")], a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on commercializing novel products that address significant patient needs announced today that it has signed an exclusive worldwide license from Cedars-Sinai to develop and commercialize the Healight Platform Technology ("Healight"). This medical device technology platform, discovered and developed by scientists at Cedars-Sinai, is being studied as a potential first-in-class treatment for coronavirus and other respiratory infections.... The Healight technology employs proprietary methods of administering intermittent ultraviolet (UV) A light via a novel endotracheal medical device. Pre-clinical findings indicate the technology's significant impact on eradicating a wide range of viruses and bacteria, inclusive of coronavirus.... "Our team has shown that administering a specific spectrum of UV-A light can eradicate viruses in infected human cells (including coronavirus) and bacteria in the area while preserving healthy cells, " stated Dr. Pimentel of Cedars-Sinai.
April 4, 2020 | 9:48pm | Updated April 4, 2020 | 9:55pm The family of a New York City schoolteacher in critical condition with COVID-19 says they have lined up a potentially lifesaving therapy for him — but his hospital was "standing in the way. " Adam Cohen said he's in a desperate race to save his brother, David Behrbom, a 47-year-old father of two who is in the ICU at White Plains Hospital Center after having tested positive for COVID-19 Sunday. The illness was the second blow for the family. Behrbom, who teaches at PS 55 in the Bronx and lives in Ardsley, was diagnosed with leukemia on March 12. He underwent five days of chemotherapy beginning March 30, which weakened his immune system, Cohen said. He is now in a medically induced coma and his organs are failing, his brother said. Behrbom's only hope may be treatment with the plasma of someone who has recovered from the coronavirus and may help him fight it off. This so-called convalescent plasma therapy is now undergoing clinical trials in New York and elsewhere.
While Kyle-Sidell's videos were the first I'd heard about this approach or theory emerging from the New York City crisis it seems like at least some physicians in Europe have come to similar conclusions.
Gordon said, "Hypervigilance is what they call it technically. " Jackson asked, "Does it feel at all strange to sit alongside your therapist as a member of Congress talking about mental health challenges? " Kildee said, "Yeah, this is not something I anticipated, but I'm just really grateful that we connected and that I was able to get help when I needed it the most. Ali Rezaie, MD, one of the inventors of this technology states, "Our lab at Cedars-Sinai has extensively studied the effects of this unique technology on bacteria and viruses. Based on our findings we believe this therapeutic approach has the potential to significantly impact the high morbidity and mortality of coronavirus-infected patients and patients infected with other respiratory pathogens. Here's a video from the pharmaceutical company providing an overview of how the UV treatment works. Reporters took to Twitter to mock @realDonaldTrump for talking about UV light killing coronavirus instead of researching it first. After The Post contacted the hospital, Cohen said he heard from a hospital official late Saturday afternoon that it would allow the procedure to go forward. But Cohen said he's lost time. "What good is this if it's going to be too late? " he asked. White Plains Hospital said because of patient privacy it could not provide specific information on the case. "Like all hospitals across the country, we are actively exploring all treatment options for our patients diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus, including convalescent plasma therapy, " the hospital said in a statement.
